Did you know that heavy rainfall can cause our sewer systems to overflow and pollute our rivers? Did you know that there are multiple tools available to minimize these overflows?
The Cities of Cambridge and Somerville and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority are working together to create plans for future sewer improvements that will reduce pollution in our rivers.
Join us virtually to learn about the alternatives we are developing to minimize combined sewer overflows, improve water quality, and achieve safer and cleaner rivers.
We can provide you an interpreter in any other language for free. To request an interpreter, please contact us at somerviva@somervillema.gov or call 311 (617-666-3311) by January 8, 2025.
Persons with disabilities who need auxiliary aids or reasonable modifications should please contact Adrienne Pomeroy in advance at 617-625-6600 x 2059 or ADA@somervillema.gov.

The City of Cambridge, the City of Somerville, and the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority are collaborating on CSO Control plans to protect and improve our water resources. The first joint public meeting to inform about combined sewers, combined sewer overflows (CSOs), and CSO controls took place virtually on June 29, 2022. If you could not attend, the recoding of the meeting is now available at this link: https://youtu.be/OWT9VTY_Iu8? and a copy of the presentation can be found at this link: https://youtu.be/q_5TJ85FA9Y
The water quality Variances currently extend through August 2024, allowing time for the Cities of Cambridge and Somerville and the MWRA to evaluate further CSO controls to reduce the CSO impacts to the Charles River Basin and the Alewife Brook/Upper Mystic River. The Current Regulatory Schedule:
- Draft Plan June 2023
- Final Plan December 2023
Cambridge, the City of Somerville and the MWRA have requested an extension to the regulatory deadlines in the Variances which includes the following requested revision dates:
- Draft Plan:: December 2025
- Final Plan: December 2026
An update to the schedule in the Variances requires a reissuance of the water quality Variances by MassDEP and approval by EPA. See "documents" tab for correspondences with MassDEP and EPA. Revisions to the Variances are currently under development by MassDEP.
