Company To Conduct Vehicle Testing in Cambridge and the Greater Boston Area Starting May 19

We wanted to make the community aware that starting May 19, 2025, a small number of Waymo vehicles will be operating in the Greater Boston Area, including Cambridge, Somerville, Boston, and Boston Logan Airport (MassPort property). Waymo is a California-based company that offers fully autonomous ride-hailing services in other major U.S. cities such as San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and Austin. These vehicles (see sample below) are expected to conduct testing for approximately six weeks as part of a short-term research visit to collect data on local streets to better inform the development of their software and hardware. The company has conducted similar short-term visits in other cities across the country.

During their vehicle testing, trained safety drivers will be behind the wheel at all times. The vehicles will not operate in autonomous mode. The purpose of this Greater Boston visit is to gather information about local road conditions and driving behaviors to support the company’s ongoing development of autonomous vehicle technology.

This visit does not represent the start of permanent operations in the Boston area.

The vehicle testing will not be accessible to the public.
