Project Background 

“CAM” refers to a portion of the city's collection system that contains combined sanitary wastewater and stormwater infrastructure. During certain rain events the CAM400 system can release combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Alewife Brook. This project will separate these systems in the Whittemore Avenue neighborhood and will install floatable controls on the existing CSO structures at CAM001, CAM002 and CAM 401B in accordance with the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s Long Term Combined Sewer Overflow Control Plan for the Alewife Brook.

The current sewer and drain utilities in this area were constructed over 100 years ago and are served by common manholes (CMHs). This construction project will eliminate the CMHs and provide significant environmental benefits by eliminating combined sewer overflows from the CAM400 outfall. The water quality of the Alewife brook will be improved. Properties will be protected from sewer backups to the maximum extent possible. Treatment costs related to the city's discharge to MWRA will be reduced. During construction there will also be opportunities to improve sidewalk conditions and pedestrian safety, pave roadways, and plant more trees in the neighborhood.

Design for this project is being managed by the Department of Public Works, in coordination with the Community Development Department. Engineering consultants are SEA Consultants Inc and MWH Americas Inc.
