The Common Manhole Separation program is a state mandated program requiring the elimination of all common manhole structures in existing separated areas throughout the city. There are a significant number of such structures in the Area 4 neighborhood and Cambridgeport neighborhood, and the City has been in the process of separating these structures over the past 20 years.  The project will reduce incidents of sewage backups and improve the quality of stormwater discharges to the Charles River.

The current contract underway is the final common manhole separation project.  After this project is complete, all manholes in the city will be separated.
