Temporary Barriers & Fencing Around Sculpture in Harvard Sq.

Beginning at 11:30pm on Sunday, August 4 and ending at 12:00pm on Monday, August 5, S&R Construction Enterprises (MBTA contractor) will be installing a barrier and fence around the granite sculpture located adjacent to the Out of Town Plaza in Harvard Square. The sculptor’s family is attempting to raised funds for restoration, but if they are not successful, the sculpture will be removed September 2013. This fence installation is an interim measure.

What to expect during this operation
Installation of the barrier and the fence is estimated to require several hours to complete and will require the use of heavy machinery. Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to have access through the area, but minor impacts to vehicular traffic on Mass Ave. and Brattle St. are anticipated. Please pay close attention to pedestrian fencing and police details.

Why is this fence being erected around the sculpture?
The “Omphalos” Sculpture by Dimitri Hadzi was installed in 1985 in association with the Red Line extension project and is owned by the MBTA. In 2011, a piece from the top of the sculpture fell and temporary fencing was placed around the structure to ensure pedestrian safety. The MBTA has conducted an engineering study and identified significant structural deficiencies in the sculpture, and has determined that additional protection is required at this time.
