Each summer Cambridge parks come alive with music, dance, storytellers, theatrical performances, puppetry, movies and more.  This year, a group of ten Cambridge teenagers will be performing at "The Hip Hop Transformation End of Summer Showcase." THHT Logo

These teenage performers worked all summer with the Cambridge Community Center and Cambridge Police Officers Michael “Whitey” Daniliuk and Anthony Santiago as part of the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program to develop pro-social hip hop.  Through a grant from the Cambridge Arts Council, the teens were able to meet with artistic advisers and purchase equipment used to help them compose and perform their own original hip hop songs.

Fight Navigator is a framework developed by Dr. Barrett and the Cambridge Health Alliance in collaboration with the Cambridge Police Youth & Family Services Unit and Cambridge youth programs designed to address the issue of retaliatory violence.  It helps youth adopt a mindset and utilize specific techniques so that they can respond to threats in a manner that avoids violence but also allows them to save face.

“The program has been a big success for everyone involved this summer,” said Darrin Korte, Director of Out-of-School Time Programs at the Cambridge Community Center.  “The kids were able to learn the history of hip hop music and culture and the role that it plays in their lives.”

Community members and families are invited to attend and support the teens as they give their performance from 6:30-7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 27th in University Park in Cambridge.

“They all sound amazing and we are very proud of what they were able to accomplish in 7 short weeks,” said Korte.

The Central Square Business Association Movie Night will follow their performance.
