Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Public Art & Exhibitions, the Public Art Administrator is responsible for the Public Art Education and Outreach Program and furthering the core goals of creating, sustaining, and promoting activities, exhibitions, and programs that offer opportunities for Cambridge residents and visitors of all ages to deepen their understanding of art in the public realm in all of its aspects, including the growing Cambridge Public Art Collection. The Public Art Administrator's responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Create and develop promotional materials, presentations, events, programs, signage and exhibits that educate the public on the City's existing Public Art collection.
- Collaborate and develop partnerships with other city departments, organizations, schools, neighborhoods, and businesses to create cross-disciplinary opportunities for residents and visitors to experience the public art collection such as walking and bicycle tours, neighborhood events, street fairs, park-based events, digital tours, curriculum, and other activities for all ages.
- Collaborate with Marketing Director to create text and prepare images for agency website, social media, promotional pieces and releases related to the public art collection and public art program for local or national media, neighborhood newsletters, City department newsletters, Open Studio brochures, tourist publications, and other marketing and outreach channels.
- Manage and update digital maps, neighborhood tours, and other educational information about the public art collection and programs.
- Raise funds through the development and submission of grant applications, foundation proposals, and solicitation of corporate and private support in order to sustain and expand the Public Art Education and Outreach Program
- Supervise and maintain day to day operations and budget for the agency's exhibition space, Gallery 344, including: development of exhibition schedule, gallery preparation and installation of artwork, writing and installation of interpretive material, identifying and developing target audiences for each exhibition, ongoing maintenance of exhibited artworks, and recruitment and training of support staff including interns and volunteers, organization of receptions and related events
- Produce and distribute Public Art Program promotional materials including press releases, public service announcements, brochures, maps, and flyers, both electronic and print.
- Attend monthly Public Art Commission meetings and record minutes for distribution to members and staff; present program-related ideas, plans, and budgets as necessary to Public Art Commission
- Handle all correspondence, contracts, invoices, and payments and manage budgets related to education and outreach programming.
- Write grant reports, quarterly program reports and provide responses to program-related inquiries from Program Director, Executive Director, City Manager and City Council as required.
- Maintain and update the on-line Public Art Artist Registry to keep artist information and documentation current; keep equipment in good working order and support the program director in setting up audio/visual needs for artist selection processes and meetings related to Percent-for-Art projects.
- Assist the Director of Public Art & Exhibitions as necessary on tasks related to the successful implementation of Percent-for-Art projects, including the planning of public art dedications and special events involving new or existing public artworks.
- Participate in community input and artists meetings to discuss selection process, public art sites and locations, artist proposals and project development in order to identify and develop education and outreach program initiatives that are responsive to the process and feedback from participants.
- Coordinate all program-related activities with the Public Art director, Director of Art Conservation, Executive Director and other CAC staff to ensure continuity of programming, fundraising, and maximize exposure for the Public Art Program and collection.
Minimum Requirements
Related BA with minimum of 3-5-years experience in arts administration. Advanced degree in the arts encouraged but not required. Proven skills with staff and project management as well as demonstrated success with arts fundraising and grant writing at a local, regional and national level. Strong ability to manage complex logistics and organize public events. Applicants should have experience in developing educational materials and making public presentations and must demonstrate excellent verbal, written and communication skills and the ability to take initiative, accomplish multiple tasks, work under pressure, and meet deadlines. Familiarity with Microsoft Office on Windows platform, standard accounting procedures, budget preparation and contract negotiation required. In addition, working knowledge of graphic design software including Adobe Photoshop, Adobe InDesign, and basic HTML strongly encouraged.
Physical Demands: Ability to access, input, and retrieve information from a computer. Ability to handle physical tasks and work on ladders related to gallery preparation and exhibition installation, including adjusting track lighting, painting, mounting artwork, moving pedestals, sculptures, and building materials. Work Environment: Standard office and gallery environment. Fluorescent lighting, carpeting and air conditioning. Moderate noise level.
Rate: $45,657.30 – $55,753.42
