Artist Statement and Bio:
I am an artist living and working in Cambridge. I own a small graphics company, Boston Custom Cards, which got its start in 1986 designing and producing original silk-screen images for my clients, mostly non-profit and community organizations. Currently, my primary medium is acrylics on canvas depicting historical sites in Boston and Cambridge. I also create Afrocentric images and scenes inspired by Black History, music and culture. My artistic focus has always been to create uplifting, inspirational and relevant portraits of Cambridge and the many facets of the Afrocentric community that exist in this city. As a native Cantabridgian I try to tell the long, vibrant history of our community through my artwork. My works are often visual allegories depicting various aspects of African American life. Our community is diverse. a complex tapestry of language, religion and society all thrown together by the tragic reality and pain of the Great Diaspora that brought us here. Afrocentric imagery can be likened to a coat of many colors. Bright hues and fluid movement on the canvas best describe our collective experience as a people. Like Jazz the images flow spontaneously, have a rhythm, and are drenched with emotion both sublime and tragic. A painted image or symbol, if done adeptly, is a metaphor representing elemental forces and foundations of our unique culture. Through my works, I try to tell a story, sing a song, visually relay the mood of our people.
