The Most Significant Budget Modifications

The FY25 Operating Budget increased $71.8M or 8.1% from the FY24 Adopted Budget. The following were among the areas that contributed to the major increases:

  • Additional funding for the School Department - $23.3M
  • Increased salaries and wages - $14.1M
  • Increased debt payments - $12.3M
  • New Cambridge Preschool Program - $10M
  • Increases in health and pension costs - $5.5M
  • Increased Massachusetts Water Resources Authority (MWRA) costs - $1M

Additional modifications were added to the budget as a result of conversations with the City Council and recent policy orders. Those increases included after school programming, rental assistance, support for the American Freedmen Commission, and enhanced community engagement.
