9 New Officers Welcomed to the Cambridge Police Department

The Cambridge Police Department welcomed nine new police officers to its ranks at a swearing-in ceremony held this week at the Main Library on 449 Broadway.

After successfully completing their training at the Lowell Police Academy and graduating last week, Officers Christopher Ames, Luis Builes, James Ferreira, Lucas Harney, Andrew Hepner, Julio Laracuente, Casimir Maziarz, Michael Morrissey and Thomas Watson were sworn in by City Clerk Donna P. Lopez in front of their family and friends. Also in attendance were Acting City Manager Lisa C. Peterson, incoming City Manager Louis DePasquale, members of City Council, Bishop Brian Greene, and former and current members of the Cambridge Police Department.

Cambridge Police Commissioner Christopher J. Burke stated, “By being sworn in today, you will become rich in experiences, strong relationships and opportunities within the City of Cambridge.”

Acting City Manager Lisa C. Peterson noted, “I want to congratulate you for joining what I consider to be the best police department in the country.”

Notable facts about the 2016 class:

• Officer Christopher Ames is a fourth generation Cambridge Police officer.
• Officer Lucas Harney joined the Cambridge Police Department after serving as a Cambridge Police Auxiliary officer.
• Officer Julio Laracuente previously worked at the Cambridge Health Alliance’s Public Safety Department and Officer Casimir Maziarz worked at Cambridge’s Department of Human Service Programs.
• Officer Thomas Watson, who is the nephew of Officer Edward Watson, was awarded the Outstanding Physical Fitness Award by the Lowell Police Academy.
• Officer Michael Morrissey is the son of a Cambridge Fire Deputy Chief and grandson of Sergeant Michael Grossi, a Hanna Award recipient that recognizes the bravery of members of the law enforcement community who put their lives on the line by dedicating themselves to safety throughout Massachusetts.
• Officer James Ferreira is the nephew of Detective Sergeant Silverio Ferreira.
• Officer Andrew Hepner is the nephew of former Mayor and current City Councilor David Maher.
• Three officers (Builes, Hepner and Watson) served in the military.
