Two Man Plead Guilty in November 2017 Cambridge Homicide

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Branville Bard, Jr. have confirmed that Kevin Reddick, 20, of Cambridge, and Osiris Chambers, 19, of Cambridge pled guilty on August 11, 2020, in Middlesex Superior Court in connection with the fatal shooting of Malachi Mims and the near-shooting of a second male on November 16, 2017.

Chambers and Reddick pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and were sentenced to 11 to 13 years in state prison by Judge Laurence Pierce. Both defendants were also sentenced to concurrent committed sentences for possession of a firearm and possession of a loaded firearm. Additionally, they were sentenced to 6 years of probation on the offenses of armed assault to rob (1 count for Reddick and 2 counts for Chambers). Reddick also pleaded guilty to armed assault to murder and possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number to begin upon completion of their committed sentences. 

On November 16, 2017, at approximately 7:30 p.m., Cambridge Police responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Tremont and Hampshire Street in Cambridge. Upon arrival, they located the victim, Malachi Mims, 29 of Cambridge, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. The victim was transported to an area hospital where he was pronounced dead. Through their investigation, authorities learned that the two defendants had arranged to meet the victim for a drug transaction. The victim and a witness picked up the two defendants on the evening of the shooting and drove to the Tremont and Hampshire Street area. The two defendants then attempted to rob the victim of marijuana at gunpoint. A search of the motor vehicle resulted in authorities locating a fingerprint that was a match to Reddick.

Video surveillance of the area surrounding the location captured two males fleeing the scene following the shooting. One suspect was wearing a black jacket and the other wearing a teal-colored jacket. A search warrant was executed at Reddick's home, which resulted in authorities locating a black jacket and teal-colored jacket matching the two suspects' attire, fleeing the shooting scene. Both jackets tested positive for gunshot residue. DNA analysis of the teal jacket matched the DNA profile of Chambers.  

The investigation on this case was conducted by the Middlesex District Attorney's Office, Cambridge Police Department and Massachusetts State Police assigned to the District Attorney's Office.
