2nd Arrest in Ongoing Investigation of Double Shootingin the area of Donnelly Field Announced
CAMBRIDGE - Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan and Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow have announced that a second suspect has been charged in connection with the May 23, 2024, double shooting in the area of Donnelly Field.
Machyus Battle, 19, of Cambridge, has been arrested and charged in Cambridge District Court with the following:
· Attempted assault and battery by discharge of a firearm
· Assault and battery by discharge of a firearm
· Assault with a dangerous weapon
· Carrying a firearm without a license
· Carrying a loaded firearm
· Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling
· Carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds
· Possession of ammunition without an FID Card
On Thursday, May 23, 2024, at 9:39 p.m., Cambridge Police responded to Donnelly Field, located at 91 Berkshire Street, for reports of multiple gunshots. The preliminary investigation indicates that Cruceta was at the basketball court at the same time as another group of people when an alleged argument occurred between Battle and Cruceta. Following a brief interaction, an exchange of gunfire occurred between Battle and Cruceta. Cruceta was wounded as well as a 22-year-old female victim who also suffered a gunshot wound, believed to be from a stray bullet fired by one of the parties.
The shooting victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Both individuals are Cambridge residents. There were no other injuries reported.
Yonayvi Cruceta, 23, of Cambridge, was previously arrested and faces the following charges:
· Attempted Assault & battery attempt with a firearm
· Carrying a dangerous weapon on school grounds
· Firearm discharge within 500 feet of building
· Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
· Carrying a firearm without a license
Machyus Battle was held following his arraignment on Monday in Cambridge District Court pending a dangerousness hearing that will be held today.
