Cambridge Police Department Youth Academy Visits Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit
The Cambridge Police Department Youth Academy visited our Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit, also known as EOD, this summer. In a demonstration, EOD disarms a potential bomb using equipment allowing them to do it from a distance. Sgt. E.J. Frammartino explains how they use a high-pressure water stream to remove the end cap. “The end cap will flip off, the pipe will flip, empty the contents and now you no longer have a pipe bomb.”

EOD’s primary mission is to ensure residents’ safety. All the members undergo specialized training, with the FBI, to be able to handle, transport and assess suspicious devices. Our explosive technicians conduct sweeps for public events like festivals, commencements and dignitary visits, not only in Cambridge, but throughout the region.
The Youth Academy is a 6-week Summer Work and Learning site offered through the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program (MSYEP). Through MSYEP, Cambridge teens get paid while gaining valuable educational and employment experience. They are also exposed to potential educational or career paths.
Students like Isaiah Garmon and Miley Smejlik say they also learned about police work more broadly. “It’s good to meet all these people, meet some officers, learn a little about police work,” said Garmon “It makes them seem more human.” Both students are considering careers in public safety. “I see a good potential future in the police, and this gives me a head start,” said Smejlik.
The Youth Academy is a collaboration between the Cambridge Police Department and the Department of Human Service Programs’ Office of Workforce Development, which manages MSYEP and provides funding for the Summer Work and Learning site.
