Cambridge Police Department’s K9 Zambra Retires, K9 Lenny Joins Team
The Cambridge Police Department has a transition underway on its staff of explosive detection canines. K9 Zambra retired this year, and she has been busy helping her handler train K9 Lenny. Our K9’s work out of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) Unit. The Labrador Retrievers undergo extensive training to help our bomb technicians locate and identify potential explosives.
Zambra has served on CPD for a decade responding to 457 incident calls and helping with 130 dignitary sweeps. Zambra even helped detectives connect a suspect to a shooting after finding key evidence. Zambra joined CPD in 2014 after the K9 Unit became full-time in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombings. Zambra has worked with four handlers, including Officer Edward Burke originally, and her current partner since 2021, Officer Charles McNeill. Officer McNeill says K9 Lenny is fully certified and on patrol. “He’s a ball of energy and very eager to get out there and work and meet residents,” said McNeill. K9 Zambra is enjoying her retirement but makes it a point to stop by and visit regularly.
