Cambridge Police Department Observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

CAMBRIDGE – The Cambridge Police Department is leading and participating in initiatives throughout October as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

As always, the Cambridge Police Department Domestic Violence Unit works to provide information focused on understanding when conflict becomes abuse and what support options are available. Download our community resource brochure.

 CPD participated in the City of Cambridge’s candlelight vigil on Wednesday, October 9, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. outside City Hall. The annual vigil honors the Massachusetts women, men, and children who have tragically lost their lives to domestic violence since last October. Local domestic violence prevention agencies will have resources for survivors and information for the community on how to recognize and talk about domestic violence.

In addition to the ceremony, The Silent Witness Exhibit will be on display throughout the day. The Silent Witness Exhibit is a visual memorial to victims of domestic violence, which honors their lives and raises awareness of the issue. The exhibit features life-size, silhouettes of victims, often with shields that display the stories of those they represent.

On the third Thursday of the month, October 17, professional staff of the Cambridge Police, Fire, and Emergency Communications will be encouraged to wear purple on Purple Thursday to honor victims and support survivors of domestic violence. All members of the public are encouraged to participate in this meaningful way to raise awareness about domestic violence. 

In addition to these events, Cambridge Public Safety is once again observing Domestic Violence Month by displaying purple in a variety of ways. Purple ribbon pins have been made available for officers and staff to wear throughout the month. Also, a purple ribbon flag is displayed on the Robert W. Healy Public Safety building, while the lights on the outside of the building shine in purple throughout the month of October.

“We are deeply committed to providing resources and supporting victims of domestic and gender-based violence, “said Police Commissioner Christine Elow. “I am proud to support the leadership, participation, and commitment of our officers and staff to these causes.”
