  Put on your dancing shoes and head over for a morning of singing and dancing! We'll sing and move together, and maybe share a story or two. For children of all ages and their grown-ups. This program will take place in the Community Room at the Valente Branch Library. If the weather is particularly fine, the program may move outside to the Valente Reading Garden on Berkshire Street.   Visions of a Dream: Autistic Artists Interpret Martin Luther King Jr.

  Korean and American artists on the autism spectrum produce their renditions of Martin Luther King Jr. according to their personal style and approach. On January 13, 2024, exhibit director Heyon Choi will present a lecture and workshop on exploring neurodiversity through artistic expression. Note: This exhibit can be seen on L2 during scheduled programming and events.

  Zing Laser Cutting 101 (Main)

  Learn how to use our Epilog Zing—an industry-standard laser cutting machine. Complete this workshop to earn a badge for the Zing laser cutter. With a badge, you can reserve the Epilog Zing to use on our equipment booking page at designated times. Note: The Epilog Zing laser cutter and Glowforge laser cutter require separate trainings. You must participate in the Glowforge workshop in order to operate our Glowforge Pro laser cutter. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

  STEAM Academy: iFp Studio (Main)

  Innovators for Purpose (iFp) Studio is a teen-powered design and innovation program where teens channel their energy and creative vision to imagine and build a better world. Blending art, design, science, technology, and storytelling within a social justice framework, teens engage in real-world client-sponsored projects. Teens are invited to learn more and apply on the iFp website: Innovators for Purpose. Innovators for Purpose (iFp) is a Cambridge-based nonprofit that inspires high-potential, diverse young people to discover their passions, develop innovative mindsets and cultivate marketable skills to solve problems they care most about. Summer Studio teens are funded in part through the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. The Cambridge Public Library STEAM Academy is part of Cambridge STEAM Initiative's efforts to enhance and expand students’ access to quality STEAM learning experiences.   Cambridge Cooks: Nagisa Ikemura teaches Bento! (Main)

  Cambridge Cooks invites Nagisa Ikemura of Nagomi Bento to teach patrons the delicate art of bento, a home-cooked lunch central to Japanese home and cultural life for centuries. Cambridge Cooks invites local chefs for a free cooking demonstration, followed by a tasting and Q&A with the chef. About the chef: Nagisa's bento journey began in middle school as a competitive athlete in Japan. She learned to make healthy, nutritious meals that kept her in shape and sparked my passion for cooking. She knew from this young age that she wanted to be a chef, and kept at it even after sports had ended! A few things popped up along the way: school, moving to America, and becoming a senior tax accountant for a Big Four accounting firm. Nagisa knows firsthand the joy that thoughtful bento makes in her everyday life and for her family and friends. It is her honor and pleasure to provide this moment of comfort, expression of care, and the feeling of nagomi!

  This week's selection: Jonathan Swift, Gulliver's Travels Reading Interests: We concentrate on Great Books in the following areas: a long novel over the summer, two sections of poetry and short stories, a book of the Bible, a Shakespeare play, an ancient and modern drama, a work of science, a smaller work of fiction, an even smaller work of fiction, and a rotating mix of politics, philosophy, and religion. Authors read in the past five years include Dickens, Keats and Yeats, O'Connor and Munro, Ecclesiastes, Sophocles and August Wilson, Darwin, Austen, Duras, The Federalist Papers, and Arendt.
