Director's Update, October 27, 2024

Dear Patrons,

On Tuesday, October 29, from 7-8:30 p.m., celebrate LGBTQ History Month with the Library and the Cambridge LGBTQ+ Commission at the Central Square Branch. We'll be joined by the local historian and author Sarah Boyer for a presentation and Q&A about Cambridge's own LGBTQ+ history. Boyer served as an oral historian at the Cambridge Historical Commission from 1997 to 2015. She wrote four books about Cambridge neighborhoods and one on World War II and the Home Front in Cambridge.

In 2015, Lois Johnson, the former president of the Boston Daughters of Bilitis (DOB), invited Boyer to help interview former DOB members. Together they spoke with 21 lesbians who were part of the emerging gay liberation movement. Johnson, who died in 2020, wanted a book on the history of Boston-Cambridge DOB. Boyers Coming Out, Becoming Ourselves: Lesbian Stories from the Boston Daughters of Bilitis, 1969-1999, ensures that these stories of courage and love for other women become part of the historical record in the struggle of all queer people to live their lives without fear. Refreshments will be provided.

Wednesday, October 30, from 3-5 p.m., get your tarot cards read at the Main Library by healer, artist, and educator Laura Campagna. Tarot tells the story of your life in pictures and is known as a mirror to the soul. This program is for teens ages 12-18.

On Thursday, October 31, from 4-6 p.m., join the Central Square Branch for a drop-in Halloween celebration with stories, crafts, and treats. Costumes are encouraged! This program is for young children and their caregivers.
