Calling All Young Writers: Submit to the 25th Annual Youth Poetry Contest

The Central Square Branch of the Cambridge Public Library is excited to announce that we are now accepting submissions for the 25th Annual Cambridge Public Library Youth Poetry Contest for K-8 students who live or go to school in Cambrige. Submit your original poems by Tuesday, April 30. Poems will be judged for interesting content and creativity as well as consistent and imaginative style. Winners will be notified in mid-May, and prizes will be awarded at a ceremony and reading on Wednesday, May 29 at 6 p.m. Poems in languages other than English are welcomed but must also include English translations (which do not need to be poetic). Sing-Along (Valente)

Put on your dancing shoes and head over for a morning of singing and dancing! We'll sing and move together, and maybe share a story or two. For children of all ages and their grown-ups. This program will take place in the Community Room at the Valente Branch Library. If the weather is particularly fine, the program may move outside to the Valente Reading Garden on Berkshire Street. Toddler Story Time (Main)

We invite children and their caregivers for 20-25 minutes of stories and songs. Designed for children 18 months to 3 years and their caregivers. This program can accommodate 45 people. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis on the day of the program. The entire party must be present to receive a ticket. This program starts promptly. Vacation Week Crafting Corner

April Vacation: Harvard Alpaca Ranch (Valente)

Alpacas from the Harvard Alpaca Ranch will be visiting the library for an educational program and meet and greet. Learn more about alpacas and take some time to say hello! This program will be outdoors at the Valente Branch Library. In the event of rain, we will move indoors to the Community Room. Registration is helpful but not required.

Sewing 101 (Main)

Main Library, 449 Broadway, Cambridge, MA 02138

In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

Vacation Week Program: "Meet the Orchestra" presented by Boston Music Project (O'Neill)

Join us for a performance of a youth chamber orchestra. A hands-on instrument petting zoo follows the performance, offering a chance for children to try playing a string instrument and to learn about different orchestral instruments.
