Cambridge Police Arrest Suspect Involved in Robbery and Stolen Credit Card Use

Cambridge Police arrested a suspect in connection with a robbery that occurred on Massachusetts Avenue in Cambridge early yesterday morning at approximately 3 a.m.

A Somerville resident reported he was walking home from a friend’s house and was pushed to the ground from behind by at least two males.  He was punched and kicked repeatedly and the suspects stole the victim’s cell phone, a wallet that contained multiple debit/credit cards and keys.

Later that morning and afternoon, his credit cards were used fraudulently in several locations, including a retail store in Somerville and an amusement park in New Hampshire. 

At approximately 7:15 p.m., the Cambridge Police observed a white vehicle that failed to stop at a stop sign on Fifth Street crossing over Cambridge Street.  The driver of the white vehicle was recognized by officers from another motor vehicle stop on Friday night and video surveillance footage from the Somerville retail store, where the victim’s credit card was used earlier in the day.  During the stop, officers also located a photo of one of the vehicle’s passengers riding a roller coaster at the New Hampshire amusement park. 

Fernando Martins, Jr., 22, 256 Hurley Street, Cambridge, was arrested by the Cambridge Police for Receiving Stolen Property Greater than $250. Separate charges were also filed by the Somerville Police. 

The details contained above are allegations.  The suspect is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
