Cambridge Police Take Illegal Gun Off Streets & Arrest Bicycle Thief

The Cambridge Police made a pair of notable arrests early Wednesday morning and Tuesday night. 

On Wednesday, July 2 at approximately 12:55 a.m., the Cambridge Police conducted a traffic stop on a motor vehicle as a result of illegally tinted windows.  During the stop, officers verified that the driver, Abdul Omer, 22, 6 Kimball Court, Woburn, MA, was driving on a suspended license. A subsequent inventory of the motor vehicle led to the discovery of an automatic handgun, which was concealed on the passenger’s side door beneath the window switch panel. Omer was arrested for Operating a Motor Vehicle with a Suspended License, Window Obstruction, and Possession of a Firearm without a Firearm Identification Card.    

Earlier in the evening at approximately 10 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, the Cambridge Police arrested a suspect responsible for a bicycle theft.  The summer months historically represent the greatest number of bicycle thefts than any other point in the year. Cambridge Police observed several males near two bicycles locked to a street pole at the corner of Gilmore Street and Western Avenue.  Further investigation revealed that a lock was cut off of one bicycle and a second lock was attempting to be cut off from another bicycle. One of the males, Neal Harris, 24, 19 Market Street #1, Cambridge, was sitting on one of the bicycles and in possession of bolt cutters. Officers arrested Harris for Larceny Over $250, Receiving Stolen Property, Attempting to Commit Crime and Possession of a Burglarious Instrument.  

“We’re very proud of our officers and the thorough work they conducted on both of these cases,” said Deputy Superintendent Paul Ames. “Anytime we can take an illegal gun off the streets and arrest a suspect involved in a careless act of stealing bicycles is a great night for the department.”
