The Cambridge Police Department is proud to announce the graduation of 22 Cambridge youth from the 2015 Cambridge Youth Police Academy. The graduation occurred on Thursday, August 13th in the Cambridge Public Library auditorium.
The Cambridge Youth Police Academy, which celebrated its sixth year, is a 6 week, 120 hour instructional program designed to expose participating youth, ages 14-18, to the various duties associated with the law enforcement profession through hands-on experience as part of the Mayor's Summer Youth Employment Program. This year, the Cambridge Police Department incorporated the North American Family Institute’s Youth and Police Initiative (YPI), a nationally and internationally renowned program, into the Cambridge Youth Police Academy. In addition to participating in YPI, youth workers have learned about the role and function of Cambridge Police Officers and varying units within the Department, including the Traffic Unit, Explosive Disposal Unit, and Special Response Team. They were also able to learn about and practice OUI stops, traffic stops, handcuffing, baton techniques, and self-defense. Participants learned about juvenile law, rights, and responsibilities with Strategies for Youth and the role of the Cambridge Fire Department, Emergency Communications Department, and ProEMS in public safety. They took a field trip to the Nashua Street Prison, worked a mock crime scene, solved a case, went rock climbing, and participated in a boot camp.
