A local college student from Cambridge yesterday received a phone call regarding an outstanding tax debt and a warrant issued for his arrest if the debt was not collected. His caller ID indicated that the call was coming from the number 617-349-3300. That is a non-emergency number for the Cambridge Police Department.
The Cambridge Police would never call residents – nor would or any other police department -- seeking to collect money or identifying information due to a debt. Unfortunately, it is becoming fairly common for hoaxers to use police numbers to give their fraudulent calls an appearance of credibility or to support their malicious intent to get someone’s personal information or funds.
Anyone receiving such a call should not provide any information and hang up immediately.
Suspicious calls purporting to be from the Cambridge Police should be reported to our Criminal Investigations Section at 617-349-3370.
