The Cambridge Police Department today announced that members of its Special Investigations Unit, along with the assistance of U.S. Postal Inspection Service, arrested two Cambridge men on June 7, 2019 for trafficking more than 400 grams of methamphetamine. The arrests were the result of a four-month investigation involving the shipment of two international packages that each contained approximately 200 grams of pills.
Two international packages addressed to residents in Cambridge were initially seized at JFK Airport in NYC in May 2019. A presumptive field test of pills contained in the packages revealed a positive presence of methamphetamine. Notifications were made by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s New York Division to the New England Division and the Cambridge Police Department, who took custody of the packages and the investigation. In June, a delivery of two packages was coordinated with U.S. Postal Inspection Service for a planned pickup at the United States Postal Service Porter Square Carrier Annex on Mooney Street. Two individuals -- Mohammed Islam, 55, 362 Rindge Avenue in Cambridge, and Mohamed Hossain, 43, 364 Rindge Avenue in Cambridge -- picked up the packages and were then stopped by the Cambridge Police, who were conducting surveillance on the suspects, once they entered and planned to leave in their vehicles.
Islam and Hossain were arrested and will each be charged with Trafficking Methamphetamine Over 100 Grams. They are expected to be arraigned today in Cambridge District Court. An investigation into this incident is ongoing.
“I want to commend the extensive and collaborative work conducted by our Special Investigations Unit and our partners on this case,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Branville G. Bard, Jr. “Intercepting and finding out who was responsible for the trafficking of this dangerous drug will have a significant impact in Cambridge and the greater Boston area.”
In addition to the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, the Cambridge Police Department was assisted on this investigation by the Randolph Police Department.
