The Cambridge Police and Emergency Communications Departments would like to alert the community of a phone scam that involves spoofing the phone number of the police non-emergency business line.
Today, the Cambridge Emergency Communications Department has received multiple reports of the scam. The scam phone calls reportedly appear as 617-349-3300, which is the non-emergency business line for the Cambridge Police. The scam callers are most frequently targeting senior residents in Cambridge and requesting bank information, Social Security Numbers and date of births due to “investigations into open criminal cases” involving residents.
As a reminder, a police department or law enforcement agency will never call a resident and ask for their personal or financial information over the phone. If you don’t recognize a phone number, the best step you can take is to let it go to voicemail or hang up right away. If it is important, whoever is calling will leave a message and you can always call back.
