Per Massachusetts General Law, Chapter 136, Section 7, a Sunday/Holiday Work Permit must be obtained for any contractor work to be performed on a Sunday or Holiday. This permit is issued only when the necessary work cannot be performed on any other day without serious suffering, loss, damage or public inconvenience.
For your convenience, we have included a fillable online version of our Sunday/Holiday Work Permit Request, which can be filled out and printed prior to seeking approval.
Reminder:
All Sunday/Holiday work impacting, or being performed on City roads and sidewalks, must be approved by the City of Cambridge Department of Public Works prior to the issuance of the permit by the Cambridge Police. No permit will be issued by the Cambridge Police without prior DPW approval. The DPW headquarter is located at 147 Hampshire St., Cambridge, MA 02139. Once the work has been approved by DPW and the appropriate DPW signature obtained, bring the form to the Cambridge Police Records Unit at 125 Sixth St., Cambridge, MA 02142 during regular business hours. In most cases, the permit will be issued the same day.
If the work is expected to negatively impact vehicular and/or pedestrian traffic, a police detail may be required. Arrangements for police detail must be made prior to or at the time of the permit request.
Cost of Sunday/Holiday Permit:
The cost of the permit is $25.00, payable to the City of Cambridge by check or cash.
