Director's Update, March 23, 2025

Dear Patrons,

A recent executive order calls for the major reduction of the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the nation’s only federal agency for America’s libraries, as well as other agencies.

The American Library Association issued a statement about this attack on library services and funding, which could include elimination of 75 IMLS positions. The Show Up for Libraries campaign has resources for those who would like more information or ways to take action. Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners Director Maureen Amyot shared that the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners receives $3.6 million from IMLS’ Grants to States Program. Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) Director Maureen Amyot shared that the MBLC receives $3.6 million from IMLS’ Grants to States Program. The MBLC uses these funds for statewide services for everyone, including:

•MBLC staff: 13 of the MBLC’s 23 staff members are at least partially funded through IMLS (5 fully funded, 8 partially funded)

•Statewide research databases

•The Commonwealth Catalog (ComCat)

•Summer Reading

•The Statewide eBook Program (Library eBooks and AudioBooks-LEA)

• Funding for the eBook platform and some eBook content

•Statewide trainings for librarians to increase access for people with vision loss

•Data collection and reporting

•Federal funding also supports the E-Rate program

As a library advocate volunteer, last weekend I called our U.S. Congresspersons and left voice messages to support the IMLS. At the behest of the Chair of the Cambridge Public Library (CPL) Trustees, Jim Roosevelt, our library boards are also contacting our Congresspersons. CPL’s Board of Library Trustees also encourages our beloved patrons to contact their Congresspersons and continue to advocate for intellectual freedom, pro-library legislation, and funding that empowers CPL and libraries across the Commonwealth to achieve our missions.
