Cambridge Police are investigating a shooting that occurred earlier this afternoon on Putnam Avenue. At approximately 1:46 p.m., a Cambridge Police officer working a detail at the corner of Putnam Avenue and Magee Street was requested by individuals in a motor vehicle in need of medical assistance. The officer observed a passenger with a gunshot wound to his upper right leg. He then applied first aid to stop the bleeding. The victim was transported to a local hospital shortly thereafter.
According to a witness, who was at the scene of the shooting, the victim had an argument with a suspect in the rear parking lot of a Putnam Avenue residence that led to the victim and the suspect wrestling one another. The suspect freed himself, re-engaged with the victim and then fired a round that struck the victim. The suspect then fled in a vehicle towards River Street.
The victim and the witness allegedly walked out to Putnam Avenue seeking to find a passing vehicle that would help take them to a hospital. A Good Samaritan picked up the two individuals and later stopped her vehicle after locating the police officer on detail.
Cambridge Police believe this is a targeted incident and that there is no threat to the public’s safety.
The suspect is described as a light-skinned male, who was wearing a black sweater, jeans and white sneakers.
