Stabbing Suspect Convicted of 2015 Cambridge Murder

Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan has announced that Antwan Gonsalves, 35, of Cambridge, was convicted today by a Middlesex Superior Court jury of first degree murder in connection with the 2015 death of Tywann Jones. Judge Thomas Billings scheduled sentencing for Thursday, February 23, at 9:00 a.m.

On September 12, 2015, at approximately 1:40 a.m., Cambridge Police received a report of a stabbing at a 7-Eleven at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Pleasant Street in Cambridge. Upon arrival, authorities and emergency personnel found the victim, 35-year-old Tywann Jones, of Cambridge, unconscious on the floor. Jones was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with life-threatening injuries. He underwent surgery but ultimately succumbed to his injuries at approximately 4:20 a.m. The victim had sustained five stab wounds to the chest and abdomen.

In the course of their investigation authorities learned through witness statements and video surveillance that on the morning of September 12, 2015, the victim was outside of the 7-Eleven when he was approached by another male known to the victim. The two males walked over to the defendant’s motor vehicle at which time the defendant began yelling at the victim to get away from the car. When the victim was walking away from the defendant’s car, the defendant jumped out of the vehicle and stabbed the victim multiple times before returning to the car and fleeing the scene. The victim walked into the 7-Eleven and collapsed.

An arrest warrant for the defendant was issued on September 16, 2015 and the defendant turned himself in to Cambridge Police on September 24, 2015.

This case was investigated by Massachusetts State Police Assigned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and the Cambridge Police Department.

The prosecutors assigned to this case were Chief of Homicide Adrienne Lynch and Assistant District Attorney Ceara Mahoney. The Victim Witness Advocate was Andrew Lauranzano.
