City Manager Louis DePasquale is pleased to announce that the City of Cambridge has signed an eight-year sublease with Cambridge Savings Bank to enable a Substation for the Cambridge Police Department in Central Square. Under the terms of the agreement, the Cambridge Police will have access to space in Carl Barron Plaza next to Cambridge Savings Bank at 628 Massachusetts Avenue.
“Bringing a new Substation to Central Square is possible because of the strong support received from our community partners,” said City Manager Louis A. DePasquale. “I want to thank the Cambridge Savings Bank for leasing space to the City, the Central Square Business Association for their ongoing collaboration with City staff, the Cambridge City Council for their leadership on this endeavor, and the men and women of the Cambridge Police department who work tirelessly each day to fulfill the department’s mission. And of course, I want to thank the residents of Central Square for clearly communicating their desire for this Substation.”
The plan is for the Substation in Central Square to be operational and open by early October; however, the assigned officers will be in place this summer. The Substation will be open to the public when officers assigned to this location are not patrolling the square on foot or by bike.
“Having a Substation in such a central location will make our officers more efficient with their time as well as increase our visibility within the community,” said Commissioner Branville G. Bard, Jr. “Ever since the Cambridge Police moved headquarters from 5 Western Avenue to its current location, there has been sentiment from businesses and area residents that they would welcome back a fixed police presence in Central Square. This new location gives us an opportunity for just that.”
The new Central Square Substation will hold a small lobby, desk space for a computer, a bathroom for CPD employees, and storage space for patrol bicycles. Department signage and a police callbox will be featured outside of the station.
