Cambridge Police Department Introduces New Recruiting Marketing Campaign

The Cambridge Police Department today unveiled a new police recruiting marketing campaign, which is focused on connecting with City of Cambridge residents interested in joining the Department. The new efforts include launching a newly created Cambridge Police recruitment website, text-for-information, social media advertisements, other online marketing initiatives and the introduction of a new Cambridge Police Cadet Program. These initiatives are intended to help the Cambridge Police Department remain more top-of-mind for those potentially interested in a career in policing and provide experiences in policing to encourage residents to apply when they qualify.

"With the numbers of new applicants slowing and veteran officers eligible for retirement increasing each year, we realize that we need to embrace new strategies and technology to find qualified and compassionate individuals looking to enhance and keep our community safe," Police Commissioner Branville Bard, Jr. said.

The new recruitment website features important dates, common FAQs, a breakdown of the examination and selection processes, information on benefits and incentives, training videos, and more. The mobile-friendly website can be found at www.cambridgepolice.org/joinCPD. Residents can also now access that site by texting the message JoinCPD (note: no spaces) to 72345. These simple steps are intended to help existing Officers share information about the new website and important dates and links with residents who may express interest in learning more about what is involved in becoming a Cambridge Police Officer.

The Cambridge Police will for the first time also begin testing social media advertising to expand its reach of candidates for the upcoming Civil Service Exam. The social media advertising will take place on Instagram and run through the final application date, which is February 19^th, 2019. 

Over the last several months, the Cambridge Police Department has been highlighting various initiatives and its role in the community online. For example, the Department has featured a “Get to Know” series that gives residents an opportunity to learn more about various Officers in the Department and why they got into policing. The latest feature is on Officer Liam McMahon, a fourth-generation Cambridge Police Officer.

The Cambridge Police will be holding an Information Session for interested applicants on Monday, February 11 at 6p in the first floor Community Room of the Cambridge Police Department, which is located at 125 6^th Street. The Cambridge Police Department is located inside the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility at 125 6th Street, Cambridge, MA 02142. The department is just a short walk from the Red Line Kendall/MIT Station and the Green Line Lechmere Station. Interested applicants can get more information on the application, hiring and selection process, timelines, and meet with officers to ask any questions. The Cambridge Police and The Future Is Ours will be jointly hosting a Police/Youth Mentoring Event on Wednesday, February 13 from 6-9p at the Cambridge Community Center (located at 5 Callender Street in Cambridge). The event will provide valuable insights and guidance for Cambridge youth interested in becoming a police officer and being mentored by an officer. The next bi-annual Civil Service exam is scheduled to take place on March 23, 2019. The final application date is February 19, 2019 with a fee of $150. A FREE examination preparation seminar will be hosted for Cambridge applicants on February 23, 2019 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Community Room at the Cambridge Police Department.

Lastly, to provide another pathway within the civil service system for Cambridge residents to become Cambridge Police Officers, the Cambridge Police is excited to announce that it will be introducing a new Cadet Program, which is expected to begin in late 2019. This program is designed for Cambridge residents between the ages of 18-23 who are interested in pursuing a career in policing. The program will offer on-the-job and classroom training. Cadets will be required to make a two-year commitment, and will receive a salary, benefits and vacation time.
