Cambridge Police Increases Visibility Around Election

The Cambridge Police Department has prepared thorough plans to ensure enhanced security and a safe environment the days leading up to, day of and days following Election Day. In addition to teaming up with local election and City officials, the Department has been working closely with agency partners and members of the business community. Highlights include:

Ballot Drop Box Security

• Increased frequency of patrol units at the City’s six exterior ballot drop box locations to address increased statewide concern over attempts to interfere with ballots and ballot drop boxes. As a reminder, an official ballot drop box location for Cambridge voters is available at Cambridge Police headquarters in front of the building at 125 6th Street (Rogers Street side).

Early Voting Visibility

• Assigned Officers to each early voting location to ensure the safety and protection of voters and workers. 
• Increased frequency of patrols at the City’s early voting locations for enhanced visibility. 

Enhanced Visibility on Election Day & Days Following

• Hosting Emergency Operations Center to streamline communication, internal responses and to more effectively coordinate with regional public safety partners.

• Planning on more available staffing. Time off has been limited and sworn personnel will be required to wear their uniforms in the event that they need to be deployed with the exception of a subset of Officers who will be on-duty in plain clothes.

• Assigning Officers to all polling locations to ensure the safety and protection of voters and workers.  

• Deploying high-visibility bicycle patrols, who will have a primary focus on the exterior of the polling locations, business districts and parks.

• Having other tactical resources available, if needed, including Officers and K-9s from the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit.
