General College Financial Aid / Scholarship Resources
FAFSA (or Free Application for Federal Student Aid)
FAFSA is the form you need to fill out to get any financial aid from the federal government to help pay for college. Many states and colleges also use the FAFSA to determine which students get financial aid—and how much they’ll get. The FAFSA asks for information about you and your family’s finances, including tax returns, so you might need your parents’ help to complete it. If you need additional help, reach out to your school counselor. Completion of the FAFSA is a great first step to being eligible for financial aid. It also helps determine if you are eligible for a PELL Grant.
Pell Grant
A Pell Grant is money the government provides for students who need to pay for college. Grants, unlike loans, do not have to be repaid. Eligible students receive a specified amount each year under this program. You’re eligible for a Pell Grant if you are eligible for federal financial aid, complete the FAFSA, and your Expected Family Contribution (EFC) falls below a certain amount. If you are eligible for a Pell Grant, you may be able to attend Massachusetts state and community colleges tuition-free.
CSS Profile
Many colleges and universities offer non-federal scholarships to applicants. To be eligible, interested applicants should complete the CSS Profile. A list of participating schools is available online.
MassTransfer
MassTransfer is a state program that encourages students to earn a 2-year Associates Degree at community college to keep college costs low. Students who do so and maintain a “B” average are guaranteed transfer admission to a State U or UMass to complete their our junior & senior years—with no application fees or essays.
