Construction Notice: Final Roadway Milling and Paving week of October 28th.

The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will be performing final roadway milling and paving on Webster Ave., from Hampshire Street to Lincoln Street the week of October 28.

The roadway grinding operation is expected to take two days (October 28 & 29) followed by paving of the roadway on Wednesday, October 30 and Friday, November 1, weather permitting.  Wet weather on scheduled paving days will delay paving until the next dry day.  Please visit the project page for any updates regarding rescheduling: www.cambridgema.gov/websterave.

Equipment that may be heard during paving operations will be, but not limited to, pavers, vibratory rollers, and vehicle back up alarms.

*Newly paved areas will be reopened to users as conditions allow, typically within a few hours of completion*

Any additional restoration items related to the project, including back of sidewalk work and pavement markings, will be completed by the contractor in the coming weeks before the end of construction.  The addition of street trees is also part of this project and tree planting will take place at the end of the project during the spring planting season.

What to Expect during Paving

  • General work hours will be 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
  • Parking will be restricted along the street for the duration of this work. Please be mindful of posted signage.
  • Use caution on milled surface as castings will be raised.
  • Motorcycles and bicycles use caution when traveling on milled surface.
  • Vehicle access in and out of properties will be restricted during work hours while crews perform the paving. Please plan vehicle and parking trips accordingly.
  • Access will be maintained for emergency vehicles and City services.

Construction Notice:  Webster Avenue Curb and Sidewalk work to begin June 11th

In association with the Webster Avenue Reconstruction Project, the City’s Contractor, Newport Construction., will begin to reconstruct the curb and sidewalk on Tuesday, June 11th. This work is anticipated to last for approximately six weeks, weather permitting.

At the end of each day, the contractor will clean the work site to allow for motorists to utilize the roadway. We kindly ask that motorists drive through the construction zone slowly outside of general working hours.

Work will begin on Webster Avenue from Hampshire St toward Lincoln St.  The contractor will begin by removing the existing sidewalk material, and then removing / repositioning curbing based on the road design.  Once the existing sidewalk is stripped and the curb is set, new sidewalks will be installed.

Detours will be in place during work hours.  Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • General work hours 7am-4pm, Monday through Friday.
  • Please check posted No Parking signs.
  • During this work, the roadway will be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars.Please use caution when opening car doors as to not damage them on the curbs.
  • Access to properties will be maintained, when possible.
  • Access will be maintained for City services and emergency vehicles.

Final roadway paving will occur at the end of the Webster Avenue project and will be announced via an additional notice in the coming months.

January 2, 2024:

Construction Notice: Webster Avenue Reconstruction Project

 As part of the Webster Avenue Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will begin mobilizing in the coming weeks.

Newport will begin installing tree protection along the street this week, followed by delivery and installation of drainage structures. DigSafe markings will also begin appearing on the sidewalk and roadways.

This work will take approximately 8 weeks to complete.

Full depth roadway reconstruction, curb resetting, sidewalk installation, and final paving will happen later this year and you will receive an additional notice prior to this work beginning.

The addition of street trees is also part of this project and planting will take place at the end of the project during either the fall or spring planting season.

What to expect during construction:

  • Work Hours will be 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday-Friday.
  • "No Parking" signs will be posted; please be sure to check dates/times.
  • We understand the impacts to business parking and loss of parking will be kept to a minimum.
  • Vehicle access in and out of properties will be maintained but may be restricted for short periods.  If you need access and your driveway is blocked, please speak to a crew member on site and they will make accommodations for you.
  • Emergency vehicles and City service vehicles will have access at all times.

Bidding for this project was delayed. The bid is now open until October 6, 2022.

Design plans are being finalized and the project is expected to go out to bid in Fall 2021. More updates, including a more detailed timeline, will be provided once a contractor is on board.


Notice: Webster Ave. Reconstruction Project Community Meeting Wednesday, February 26th

Webster Ave, between Lincoln St. and Hampshire St., is scheduled for upcoming street and sidewalk reconstruction as part of the City’s 5 Year Plan.

The Department of Public Works and the City’s Community Development Department will be hosting a second community meeting on Wednesday, February 26th from 6PM-7:30PM at the Valente Library Program Room, 826 Cambridge Street to discuss the Webster Ave. Reconstruction Project.

City staff would like to discuss preliminary designs for traffic calming and safety improvements for the street. These designs were developed after receiving feedback at the first community meeting held Tuesday, April 23rd 2019. We encourage you to attend, as we value the feedback we receive from Cambridge residents and businesses.

As part of the continued design process, crews will be inspecting catch basins beginning Tuesday 11/12. "No Parking" signs will be posted 48 hours in advance. Work will last approximately 1-2 days at each location.

Notice: Chapter 90, Contract 24 – Road Reconstruction of Park Ave., Webster Ave., Chestnut St., Dodge St. and Elm St.

As the design team continues their work, Briggs Engineering is scheduled to begin the pavement analysis on the Contract 24 Streets on Wednesday 8/28/2019. The working will include obtaining pavement cores and conducting small test pits, approximately 2’ by 2’, to obtain gravel samples below the pavement. Please take note of "No Parking" signs posted 48-hours in advance.

Notice: Chapter 90, Contract 24: Road Reconstruction of Park Ave., Webster Ave., Chestnut St., Dodge St.

As part of the design process for roadway reconstruction of your street, the City's contractor Kleinfelder and their subcontractors, will begin field work which may include subsurface investigations, topographical survey, utility inspections, etc. The purpose of these investigations is to obtain existing pavement, utility, and soil/groundwater conditions. The results will assist in developing a complete street design for your street. Initial existing conditions survey will be presented at upcoming community meetings where residents will have the opportunity to provide input. Residents will notice DigSafe marks in the area and should be are of No Parking signs. Subsurface investigation locations have been selected in areas that will give the best representation of roadway conditions while minimizing traffic and parking disruptions where possible. However, "No Parking" areas will still be designated. "No Parking" signs will be posted 48 hours in advance. The impacted streets are:
  • Park Avenue – Huron Ave to Holworthy St
  • Webster Avenue – Lincoln St to Hampshire St
  • Chestnut Street – Sydney St to Pleasant St
  • Dodge Street – Western Ave to Callender St
All work is part of the early design phase and residents will be notified of all community meetings and any upcoming construction work as the project progresses. Thank you for your patience as we work to improve your street.
