Project Image

The Cambridge Public Schools’ Innovation Agenda will result in the creation of four new upper school campuses serving students in grades 6 to 8. The King Open School, located at 850 Cambridge Street, Cambridge, will be the second school to be redesigned to include a JK-5 Program, an Upper School Program, Community School and Afterschool programs.

The City of Cambridge has selected William Rawn Associates, Architects, Inc. in association with Arrowstreet Inc. to prepare a Feasibility Study for this project. The Feasibility Study is expected to be completed In July of 2015, then followed by design and construction of the approved recommendation of the study. The anticipated school opening is September 2019.

This anticipated NET ZERO project is to include the redesign of these schools to continue the Innovation Agenda vision of the Cambridge Public Schools. The school programming will include pre-school and Community School programs. This site and project will also include the redesign of the Valente Branch Library and the Gold Star Pool. This study shall include reviewing the feasibility of relocating the Cambridge School Department administrative offices to this same site. This study will provided an opportunity to review existing and new traffic flows for student drop off and pick up. It will also explore the possibility of engaging Donnelly Field and the Frisoli Center with better lines of sight from Cambridge Street. It is anticipated that this study will provide more engaging open space around the complex and will be enhanced with better lighting and landscaping.

Notice: Removal of Traffic Signal at Hunting St. and Cambridge St.

The goal of these updates is to keep the community informed about construction impacts on the neighborhood. We want to apologize to our subscribers because this week we did not meet this goal. Thank you for your continued support and feedback.

As part of the overall traffic and transportation plan for the project that was discussed during planning and design, the traffic signal at the corner of Hunting St. and Cambridge St. was removed this week to allow for the installation of a raised intersection, improved crosswalks, and school drop-off/pick-up lane in front of the school building. The new raised intersection will provide safe crossing in front of the school when it opens, while helping to calm traffic on Cambridge Street. People wishing to cross Cambridge Street at a traffic signal will continue to be served by the existing traffic signal 150 feet to the west at Willow Street.

Although there will be a period of time between the removal of the signal and the installation of the raised crosswalk, there is currently limited demand for crossing at this location and the new raised crosswalk will be installed well before the school complex opens. The signal removal was necessary at this time to allow work to proceed as we transition to construction of street and sidewalk improvements. The contractor performed the work ahead of schedule and we apologize for the fact that this work took place without advance notification to the community.

Coming Up This Week:

Crews will continue working on the areas around the exterior of the King Open and Cambridge Street Upper School next week as part of ongoing street and sidewalk work.

Concrete deliveries, solar panel deliveries, fence placement and barricade relocation WILL require parking restrictions on Willow St., Berkshire St. and Cambridge St. Please pay close attention to "No Parking" signs as locations will shift throughout the week.

Extended work hours will continue from 5/20-5/25. Extended work hours are M-F, 7AM-4PM and Saturday 9AM-5PM. As always, emergency vehicles will have access at all times.

Coming Up Next Month:
Beginning mid-June, the work site will extend into Cambridge St. between Willow St. and Berkshire St. so that crews can begin working on construction of the bike and bus lanes. This will result in a shift of the travel lane on Cambridge St. to maintain 2-way traffic. Metered parking spots on the north side of Cambridge St. will be removed to accommodate this travel lane for traffic. Pedestrian detours will be in place. Please pay close attention to signage. This work is expected to last until the end of August when the school will open for the 2019/2020 school year. Thank you for your patience as we work to complete the final stages of this project.

Community Notice - King Open and Cambridge Street Upper School & Community Complex Update

The relocation of the Cambridge Public Schools District Administration Offices from Thorndike Street to the project site was considered as part of the feasibility study for the King Open and Cambridge Street Upper Schools & Community Complex.

The inclusion of the CPS Administration Offices has been considered as a programming and design element through Schematic Design, and after a detailed review of cost, zoning, net zero, community feedback, and other related issues, the final determination by the City has been made to include CPS Administration Offices on the site.

The project includes the complete demolition of all existing structures on the northern side of the site at 850 Cambridge St and the construction of a new facility. The project boundary is approximately the walking path between the existing school building and Donnelly Field. In addition, the basketball courts, seating area, and play area at the Frisoli Youth Center will be redesigned and rebuilt as part of the project. All programs currently on the site will be incorporated into the new building, including King Open School, Cambridge Street Upper School, Human Services Preschool, Extended Day and Community School programs, Valente Library, and Gold Star Pool. The district offices for Cambridge Public Schools will also be added to the program on the site.

The addition of the CPS Administration Offices to the site is not anticipated to impact open space, function of the school buildings or community areas, or overall timeline of the project. A separate entrance and exit for the offices will be located on Berkshire Street as to not interfere with students or overall function of the site programming.

As parking was a top concern for residents in the area, the decision to include the CPS Administration Offices on site took into account the addition of the underground parking garage and other accommodations that will be made for teacher and administration staff as to not to significantly burden already constricted parking in the area. Additional traffic and impact study information will be shared at the next Community Meeting on Thursday, May 26th.

The City is pleased to be able to incorporate the CPS Administration Offices into the site and solve a long-standing need for school department employees.

June 2015

As many in the Cambridge community are aware, a fire broke out on Saturday, May 30 at the Martin Luther King Jr. School (located on Putnam Avenue), which is currently under construction. The State’s Fire Marshal’s Office and the Cambridge Fire Department continue to investigate the cause of the fire. While the construction team and the disaster recovery team have made every effort since the May 30th fire to keep this project on schedule, it has become clear that in order to ensure a safe and secure teaching and learning environment for all staff and students, the completion and opening of the MLK Jr. School/Putnam Avenue Upper School will be delayed. The City Manager’s office and officials from the Cambridge Public Schools, are currently working on a revised project timeline, which will be completed prior the end of the current school year. The second set of school communities (i.e., King Open and Cambridge Street Upper School) that were scheduled to move during the summer months also will be delayed.

In light of this new information, the City is postponing the Thursday, June 11, King Open/Cambridge Street Upper Schools and Community Complex Project community meeting. Once the revised timeline is solidified, the City will reschedule the meeting; this will enable the City to provide more accurate information to the community. The delay in the opening of MLK Jr. School/Putnam Avenue Upper School may impact the schedule for the King Open School, Cambridge Street Upper School, Valente Library, Gold Star Pool, and Community Complex Project. The City Administration will work closely with the Cambridge School Department to create a detailed logistical plan for the 2015-2016 and the 2016-2017 academic years. Once the revised project timeline is completed, we will update the community. We will also provide updates on the project’s webpage as important information develops.

City staff and architects will be in attendance to lead the discussion.
