Elm St., between Webster Ave. and Hampshire St., is scheduled for upcoming street and sidewalk reconstruction as part of the City’s 5 Year Plan.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE: Base Paving Scheduled for Friday, October 4

The City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will be placing a base layer of asphalt on Elm Street between Hampshire Street and Webster Avenue on Friday, October 4th.

Work is expected to take approximately one day to complete, weather permitting. If conditions are wet on the day of scheduled paving, work will be delayed. Please visit the project page for any updates regarding rescheduling at www.CambridgeMA.gov/ElmStreet.

The roadway will also be lower, making the curbs higher for parked cars. Please use caution when opening car doors so as not to damage them on the curbs.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • General work hours are 7 a.m. – 4 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • Please check posted No Parking signs
  • Access will be maintained for abutters whenever possible. Caution should be used. After work hours, roadways will reopen for all in their normal travel directions.
  • Access will be maintained for City services and emergency vehicles.

Final roadway paving will occur at the end of the Elm Street Reconstruction Project and will be announced via an additional notice.

Updated Construction Notice: Roadway Reconstruction to begin Week of 9/30

As part of the ongoing Elm St. Reconstruction Project, the City's Contractor, Newport Construction, will begin to reconstruct the roadway on Elm St. (Hampshire St. to Cambridge St./Cambridge St. to Webster Ave) beginning the week of September 30.

To ensure that the roadway conditions will be favorable for many years to come, crews will engage in full-depth reconstruction. At the end of each day, the contractor will clean the work site to allow for motorists to utilize the roadway. We kindly ask that motorists drive through the construction zone slowly outside of general working hours.

The full-depth reconstruction phase of the project is expected to take approximately 1 week to complete, weather permitting. Work will begin on Elm St. from Hampshire St. to Cambridge St./Cambridge St. to Webster Ave. The contractor plans to complete full-depth excavation, then place a base layer of pavement.

After full-depth reconstruction is complete, beginning the week of 10/7, the Contractor will begin the curb and sidewalk work phase (removing existing sidewalks, removing and resetting curb, and installing new ADA Compliant sidewalks). The Curb and sidewalk phase is expected to take approximately 3 weeks to complete, weather permitting.

Detours will be in place during work hours. Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

What to Expect During Construction:

  • Removal of posted No Parking signs can add extensive time to the contract.

The City's contractor, Newport Construction, has been granted a Noise Variance Permit #284989 to conduct necessary water work at Cambridge Street and Elm Street on September 9-14 during the hours of 6 p.m.-7 a.m.

Construction Notice: Drainage work and Water work to begin May 28

As part of the Elm Street Reconstruction Project, the City’s contractor, Newport Construction, will mobilize on Tuesday, May 28th to begin excavating and installing new drainage structures. Crews will work primarily between Hampshire Street and Webster Avenue.

Following drainage work, weather permitting, Newport will begin the installation of the water main along Elm Street. Residents will receive a notice with specific details regarding this work.

The Drainage and water work is expected to last approximately 12 weeks, weather permitting.

The Elm Street Reconstruction Project is part of the City’s 5-Year Plan for Streets and Sidewalks, and will include paving, sidewalk work, and pedestrian ramp installations.

Detours will be in place during work hours. Please look for Detour signs, Road Closed signs, and No Parking signs as they will be changing frequently during the work.

Elm St., between Webster Ave. and Hampshire St., is scheduled for upcoming street and sidewalk reconstruction as part of the City’s 5 Year Plan.

The Department of Public Works and the City’s Community Development Department will be hosting a second community meeting on Wednesday, March 18th from 6PM-7:30PM at the Public Works Main Conference Room, 147 Hampshire Street to discuss the Elm St. Reconstruction Project.

City staff would like to discuss preliminary designs for traffic calming and safety improvements for the street. These designs were developed after receiving feedback at the first community meeting held Tuesday, October 15th, 2019. We encourage you to attend, as we value the feedback we receive from Cambridge residents and businesses.
