The City of Cambridge is proud to celebrate the six month anniversary of its exciting pilot program for curbside compost collection. Over 600 households in a specific section of North Cambridge have collected over 88,000 pounds of food scraps for composting since April 2014. To celebrate this achievement, Cambridge Recycling will be involved in two fun events in October. Visit the Cambridge Recycling table where program participants can meet their fellow composters and eligible North Cambridge households can sign up to participate for the second half of the pilot. There will be amazing tips to reduce food waste and compost games for all.
1. Harvest Hoopla on October 18 from 1pm - 4pm at Pemberton Farms, 2225 Mass Ave. There’ll be pumpkin painting, apple cider and doughnuts for the whole family and hard cider, wine and mead tastings for adults.
2. Food Heroes Awards Ceremony on October 23 from 5pm-7pm at City Hall, 795 Mass Ave, 2nd Floor. In honor of the 4th Annual Food Day, a nationwide celebration of healthy, sustainably produced foods and a campaign for better food policies, Mayor Maher will present awards to the selected Food Heroes, individuals who dedicate their time and energy to ensuring that everyone in our community is nourished and cared for. Food Heroes are residents that help support local farms, gardens, or urban agriculture; those who work to reduce hunger or fight for food justice; those who support sustainable agriculture or fishing; or someone who fights for better working conditions for food or farm workers.
