Four Cambridge Department of Public Works employees were honored with the Ruth and Carl F. Barron Family Achievement Award on August 31, 2016 at DPW headquarters located at 147 Hampshire Street in Cambridge.
Owen O’Riordan, Commissioner of Public Works, recognized Nelson Costa, Andreas Kostakis, Desi Powell, and Marc Selby at a ceremony attended by their peers.
Nelson Costa, a Motor Vehicle Equipment Repair Worker in the Vehicle Maintenance Division, received this recognition because he is an outstanding team member who is punctual, resourceful, and always willing to share his automotive repair knowledge and skills when needed. He joined DPW in October 2014.
“Nelson is a dedicated worker who is conscientious and helpful to his co-workers.” said Commissioner O’Riordan. “He takes on every task and challenge presented to him with a ‘can do’ attitude.”
Andrea Kostakis, aka “Andy,” is a Painter in the Building Maintenance Division. Andy was honored because he has done an outstanding job in demonstrating consistent punctuality, a positive attitude, and pride in his job. He began working in this position in May 1999.
“Painting projects that Andy is involved in are meticulous and well done,” said Commissioner O’Riordan. “It’s easy to tell by the finished product that Andy is skilled in what he does.”
Desi Powell, an HVAC Technician in the Building Maintenance Division, was chosen for this recognition because he exhibits focus on the tasks and demands of his job. His hard work is evidenced by his teamwork and timely completion of projects. Desi joined Public Works in June 2015.
“Desi has strong customer service skills which have been brought to the attention of his supervisors on several occasions by members of the community,” said Commissioner O’Riordan. “He pays attention to detail, listens well, is responsible, and very reliable.”
Marc Selby, a Gardener in the Parks and Forestry Division, is a Massachusetts Certified Landscape Professional and a Certified Playground Safety Inspector, and was honored for being a commendable worker who is self-motivated and highly reliable. Marc joined Public Works in April 2014.
“Marc exemplifies that hard work and consistency produce great results which can be seen in the quality and improvement in our gardener-maintained sites around the City,” said Commissioner O’Riordan. “He has great skills in interacting with residents as well as his co-workers, and is an asset to our department.”
The Ruth and Carl F. Barron Family Achievement Award, established in 1992, is, “Presented in recognition of outstanding productivity, distinguished performance and service to the City if Cambridge and Department of Public Works.” Mr. Barron, a fixture in Cambridge, was an enthusiastic supporter of the City of Cambridge and the Department of Public Works.
