The City of Cambridge is sharing the following information from the MBTA about service advisories for the Harvard and Central square MBTA Station elevators.
Beginning April 2, 2018 and lasting through Spring 2019, elevator in Harvard Square will be out of service for construction. Similarly, on April 9 2018. the Inbound elevator in Central Square will be out of service for construction. The Outbound elevator in Central Square and Brattle St. elevator outside Harvard Square will remain in service.
The MBTA advises riders in Central Square to:
- OPTION 1: Use call box to request shuttle to KENDALL/MIT.
- OPTION 2: Take an ALEWIFE (outbound) train to HARVARD then use the ramps to transfer to ASHMONT/BRAINTREE train.
Elevators will be out of service to be replaced and enlarged to improve the accessibility of Central Square Station.
The MBTA advises riders in Harvard Square to:
- Please use the elevator at Brattle Square during closure.
This temporary service change is in place while crews perform necessary work as part of station accessibility improvements.
The MBTA will have Customer Service Agents in Central Square on the platform and at street level for the first two weeks of the elevator shutdown to assist. There will be one full size MBTA bus staged at Kendall. When a rider requires the bus at Central, they will press the call box to summons the driver. Wait time is expected to be 5-7 minutes, equivalent to wait times between trains.
