CONSTRUCTION UPDATE – FERN STREET - May 29, 2018
We appreciate everyone’s patience and understand that the work has been disruptive for residents. We are pleased to report that the contractor has made great progress removing the existing mounds and the removal is completed ahead of schedule.
The Contractor, P. Gioioso & Sons, began work on Fern Street to remove and replace the existing hardscape mounds with earthen and landscaped mounds on May 21st. The demolition and prep work was anticipated to take 2 to 3 weeks to complete, but the contractor made good progress and was able to complete it last week.
The remaining work includes shaping and planting the earthen mounds. This work will be less disruptive and is anticipated to take approximately 1 week to complete. Work hours will be from 7am to 4pm. Please pay attention to No Parking signs during construction.
For any questions about construction please call Catherine Daly Woodbury, Project Manager, at 617.349.4818. Thank you for your patience during this reconstruction effort.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE – FERN STREET - May 14, 2018
Fern Street was designed by artists, Chat Travieso and Yeju Choi, through a collaborative process with the community, students from the Tobin Montessori School and city staff. The goal of the design was to create an engaging public space for all age levels that provided a key bicycle and pedestrian connection to and from the neighborhood and the Tobin School. While the path has been quite successful and is enjoyed by many users, issues have been identified about skateboarding activity on the path, particularly as it relates to safety for users and noise impacts on nearby residents.
In response to these issues, city staff initiated a process to alter the project to deter skateboarding activity. As a result of research and discussions with city staff, residents, consultants and the artists, the existing hardscape mounds on Fern Street will be removed and replaced with earthen and landscaped mounds that will continue to provide interest and allow interaction by users of the path.
Beginning on Monday, May 21st the City’s contractor, P. Gioioso & Sons will begin work on Fern Street to remove and replace the existing hardscape mounds with earthen and landscaped mounds. Work is anticipated to take approximately one month to complete; approximately 2 weeks to remove the existing hardscape mounds; approximately 1 week for prep work; and approximately 1 week to install the new earthen and landscaped mounds.
Work hours will be from 7am to 4pm. Please pay attention to No Parking signs during construction.
