The Department of Public Works was recently awarded $125 thousand dollars from the Community Preservation Act. The Community Preservation Act (CPA) helps communities preserve open space and historic sites, create affordable housing, and develop outdoor recreational facilities.
For the past two weeks the Department of Public Works Forestry Division has been utilizing these funds to work on expanding the bare root nursery. This gravel bed nursery serves as a temporary holding place for bare root trees to be planted around the City.
The Department received two deliveries of bare root trees totaling 523 new trees of over 40 different species. A portion of these trees will be planted this Fall by DPW Forestry crews in 3 micro forests as part of Participatory Budge Cycle 7. The majority of the trees will stay “heeled in” in compost/woodchips throughout the winter so their root systems can continue to grow. Bare root trees can be safely held in the nursery for up to one year.
