On March 22, the city’s contractor, Mattuchio Construction, began working on an emergency repair to the sewer main on Green Street between Pearl Street and River Street. Unexpected subsurface conditions were encountered, and work is expected to continue for two more weeks.
The contractor must carefully remove approximately 25 feet of sewer main (from the start of the garage building extending towards Pearl Street) that is encased in several feet of concrete.
The contractor must set up a flow bypass system for the sewer main to complete this work. A portion of the sidewalk adjacent to the garage will be temporarily closed. Road widths and traffic flows in this area make it a challenging location to perform excavation and we thank you in advance for your patience as we complete this critical repair.
What to Expect during Construction:
- Work hours are expected to be 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday.
- Depth of excavation will be approximately 10 feet. There may be times when this section of road must be closed to through traffic. Expect delays and seek alternate routes, if possible.
- The construction team will work with MBTA and the city to maintain access for buses and the city’s parking garage.
- “No Parking” signs will be posted; please be sure to check dates/times.
- Police officers will be on site to assist with vehicle traffic and pedestrians.
- Pedestrian access and access into properties and the parking garage will be maintained at all times, but may be restricted in certain ways.
- For local traffic, all businesses will remain open to patrons. Some parking in the immediate area will be restricted. Please look for “No Parking” signs, and ask police details or construction personnel if you are unsure.
- Emergency vehicles will have access at all times and all city services will continue.
