Beginning on November 20, 2020, the City of Cambridge will be enforcing a winter construction moratorium. This moratorium will halt all excavation in the public right of way for the winter season. Beginning on this date, there shall be no excavation in the public right of way. The winter moratorium does not apply to work related to utility emergencies.
Excavation in the public right of way beyond this date will only be approved for emergency work, contractors working on City projects and projects with an approved moratorium waiver. Requests for a waiver of the winter moratorium should be addressed to Owen O’Riordan, Commissioner of Public Works and be sent via email to Jeya Niranjan (
jniranjan@cambridgema.gov) and Andrew Bock (
abock@cambridgema.gov). Requests should contain information on the nature of the proposed work, duration and why work needs to occur before the 2021 construction season.
Any steel plates in the roadway should be removed unless prior approval has been obtained by the DPW. If prior approval was obtained, the Department of Public Works must be notified of all the plate locations. City projects will continue as scheduled.
