Russel Field Path Now Open - November 3, 2016

As of today, Thursday, November 3, the path has reopened for public use and the detour is no longer in place.

The City and MBTA thank residents for their patience and understanding while work on the path was performed.

Pedestrians and cyclists are asked to exercise caution while using the path as the contractor will be on site in the coming days to complete some additional work.

Path markings and signage also still need to be installed, and this work will be performed at a later date.

None of the remaining work is anticipated to require additional path closures.

Beginning on Tuesday, October 11, the MBTA’s Contractor, N.E.L Corporation, will begin preparations on site for the Russel Field Path maintenance project.

On Monday, October 17, the path will close for construction. The project is anticipated to take approximately 4 weeks to complete. A detour will be in place along Rindge Ave from Comeau Field to Alewife Brook Parkway. This sidewalk will serve as a pedestrian detour during the path closure. Last year, the City of Cambridge and the MBTA developed a maintenance improvement project to address poor drainage and flooding concerns on the Russell Field Path, which is maintained by the MBTA. The MBTA is planning to reconstruct the path beginning in mid-October. The project is anticipated to take 4 weeks to complete.

The project will raise the existing pathway elevation and not involve excavation of soils or soil-disturbing activities. Path markings at the intersection of Linear Park and the MBTA path at Russell Field will be installed by the City of Cambridge after the conclusion of the MBTA’s work. See image below for graphic showing similar markings. Signs along the path will also be installed and reinforce the message that the path is to be shared by all. Russell Field Path
Project update – June 24, 2016

Last year, the City of Cambridge and the MBTA developed a maintenance improvement project to address poor drainage and flooding concerns on the Russell Field Path, which is maintained by the MBTA. The MBTA is planning to reconstruct the path this summer. More details will be available soon.

Project Updates:
• The MBTA has received a final construction bid package and has obtained approval from the Cambridge Conservation Commission to move forward with the path reconstruction.
• Path reconstruction will require a temporary path closure. More details will be available soon.
• The DPW and GCP Applied Technologies will be undertaking spot sidewalk improvements along Rindge Ave (from Comeau Field to Alewife Brook Parkway) starting the week of June 27. This sidewalk will serve as a pedestrian detour during the path closure.

Russell Field Path: Project Update
March 23, 2016 The City of Cambridge and MBTA have been working together to develop a maintenance improvement project to address the issues on the Russell Field Path which is owned and maintained by the MBTA.

Project Updates:

• MBTA is planning to reconstruct the path mid-summer 2016.
• Kleinfelder, the engineering consultant, is finalizing a construction bid package and a submittal for the Conservation Commission.
• Construction will require a temporary path closure. Public Works and Kleinfelder are evaluating detour route options for path users.

Community Meeting Notice: Russell Field Path
February 24, 2016

The Department of Public Works and the MBTA will host a community meeting on Wednesday, February 24th from 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the Rindge Ave Upper School auditorium located at 70 Rindge Ave to discuss path flooding issues on the multi-use path that connects Russell Field to the MBTA’s Alewife Station.

The City of Cambridge and MBTA have been working together to develop a maintenance improvement project to address the issues on this path which is owned and maintained by the MBTA.

Come to the meeting to learn more about the path and opportunities for improvements:

• Background of flooding issues
• Overview of the MBTA easement of the path
• Construction challenges associated with this location
• Options evaluated to improve the flooding, including short-term maintenance improvements that have been implemented
