This week the Boston area welcomes the return of the BIO International Convention. Over 15,000 biotechnology professionals join together to review the state of the industry and the path forward. The Boston region is one of the premier global biotechnology centers and at its heart lies the innovation engine at Kendall Square in Cambridge.

Six of the 25 largest employers in Cambridge and four of the top ten are biotechnology companies or the biotech tech arm of multinational pharmaceutical firms. In all, Cambridge is home to more than 200 life science-related companies and numerous private institutes that complement the city’s academic and commercial entities.

A few institutions and companies here in Cambridge include: Genzyme, Novartis Institute of BioMedical Research, Biogen Idec, Broad Institute, Draper Laboratories, Akamai, Google, Inc, Microsoft, Pfizer and the Cambridge Innovation Center, which is home to over 400 companies. The strong presence of over 80 venture capital firms in the Boston metropolitan area continues to fuel the growth of biopharmaceutical and related businesses in Cambridge.
