CloudHouse Shade Pavilion

To help beat the heat this summer, the Community Development Department has installed a whimsical temporary pavilion to provide shade and cooling for residents in The Port.

Located in Greene-Rose Heritage Park, at the intersection of Harvard St and Windsor St, CloudHouse provides needed shade and seating in an active recreational area to reduce the impacts of extreme heat and sun. It is also designed to function as a joyful community space. The pavilion provides flexible seating and an open form that invites people to socialize, rest, and enjoy a favorite neighborhood park!

The pavilion is constructed using a technique that creates structural surfaces out of low-cost recyclable material. The entire structure is composed of only three different parts that are used to shape the roof, walls, individual seats, and communal benches. The pavilion is inventively constructed in modules and can be reconfigured based on specific park needs.

“The shade pavilion is a step towards exploring social resilience strategies. It is a place to retreat from the increasing heat and meet friends and neighbors, while bringing a sense of delight to the neighborhood,” said Iram Farooq, Assistant City Manager for Community Development.

The shade pavilions are a project of the City’s Public Space Lab, a new initiative to cultivate inclusive and participatory public spaces through experimentation and community partnerships.www.cambridgema.gov/publicspacelab
