95-97 Pine Street
In 2010, Homeowner's Rehab, Inc. (HRI) completed extensive renovation of twelve existing rental units at 95-97 Pine Street with support from the City. These units were previously owned by the St. Paul AME Church. The church sold the building to HRI to ensure that the housing would remain affordable under a long-term deed restriction, while ensuring the building received much-needed rehabilitation. HRI redesigned the units to create twelve spacious family-sized units, including one fully accessible unit. There are eight 3-bedroom and four 2-bedroom units.
With assistance from the Cambridge Historical Commission, HRI fully restored the exterior of the building. In addition, HRI utilized all available resources to make the building a model of "green" restoration. There are rooftop photovoltaic and solar thermal arrays, defraying costs for electric and hot water. The building received LEED Platinum certification, the highest rating for energy efficiency.
The building is a model for sustainable rehab work that incorporates historic preservation. 95-97 Pine Street will also provide affordable rental housing for twelve families in a vibrant neighborhood close to transportation and services. These units will be an asset to the community for years to come.
