Central Square Bus Access and Circulation Study

The City of Cambridge hired a consultant to study the transit routing, circulation, and access for MBTA routes (1, CT1, 47, 64, 70, 70A, 83, and 91) around Central Square. The purpose of the study was to develop recommendations for reducing crowding for people waiting for the bus and to improve access to and circulation around Central Square.

This study is complete. No further updates to this project page will be made.

This project consisted of the following work:

  • Data collection and analysis to provide information on the existing conditions for transit around Central Square;
  • Creating a list of issues to consider while developing ideas for improving bus circulation and access;
  • Creating a list of potential ideas to improve bus circulation, routing, stops, and layover locations;
  • Refining the list to include up to three conceptual bus circulation plans; and
  • Producing a draft report, which provides more detail on the conceptual design level for the selected circulation plans, along with high level opinions of probable cost estimates.

Throughout the study process, work and draft reports were reviewed by City staff and the Transit Advisory Committee, including members of the public attending Committee meetings.
