Fresh Pond from Strawberry Hill Neighborhood

Strawberry Hill, with about 2,500 residents, is the smallest neighborhood by land area in Cambridge. Strawberry Hill is mostly residential, and includes multifamily homes and a few apartment buildings. There is a small commercial area along Mount Auburn Street that extends into Belmont and Watertown, both of which border the neighborhood. Mount Auburn Street and Huron Avenue are at the southern and northern edges, respectively, and serve as the main thoroughfares through the neighborhood. Across Huron Avenue from the residential neighborhood is the Fresh Pond Reservation and part of the Thomas P. O’Neill, Jr. Municipal Golf Course. Four MBTA bus routes serve Strawberry Hill, with connections to Harvard and Watertown Squares.

The most recent Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study was completed in 2007. The objective of the neighborhood study and subsequent updates is to identify planning issues in the neighborhood and articulate recommendations to address those issues. The study recommendations are the key part of the neighborhood study and updates. The recommendations are used not only to guide neighborhood planning efforts for the Community Development Department but in many cases are included as work items for other City departments when appropriate.

In 2006 the Community Development Department held two public meetings in April and June to discuss updating the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study. At these meetings Department staff reported on progress made on recommendations from the 1999 study. The staff also sought neighborhood comment on new recommendations regarding land use and zoning, transportation, housing, economic development and open space.

2007 Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study Update

In 2007 the Department published the Strawberry Hill Neighborhood Study Neighborhood Study Update: Summary, Recommendations, and Action Plan, which reviews the discussions at the neighborhood meetings, describes recommendations proposed there, and updates the status of recommendations from the 1999 study.

Fresh Pond Reservation

Fresh Pond reservation consists of 162 acres of open space surrounding and protecting the 155-acre Fresh Pond Reservoir, a vital part of the drinking water supply system for the City of Cambridge.
