The City of Cambridge has submitted an Interim Action Plan to the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) as required by a new state law requiring communities served by the MBTA to have zoning districts that allow muti-family housing to be built as-of-right.
Most land in Cambridge is zoned to allow multi-family housing to built as-of-right. Staff from the Community Development Department and other City departments have reviewed the guidelines issued by DHCD in 2022. Based on that initial review, staff believe that Cambridge’s current zoning will meet the DHCD guidelines.
As of February 2, 2023, Cambridge is one of 122 Massachusetts communities that has submitted an Interim Action Plan. If DHCD approves the Interim Action Plan, then Cambridge will be in compliance through December 31, 2023. By that date, Cambridge will need to demonstrate that it is in full compliance.
