O'Brien Highway (Route 28) Reconstruction Project

O'Brien Highway is being redesigned and reconstructed from Museum Way to Cambridge Street. This also includes some nearby streets. The developer of Cambridge Crossing, Divco West, is responsible for the project. The City of Cambridge Planning Board Permit PB-179 requires this reconstruction. In the redesign plan creation, DivcoWest included City and Massachusetts Department of Transportation staff.

On O'Brien Highway between Museum Way and Cambridge Street, this reconstruction includes:

  • separated bicycle lanes
  • new sidewalks
  • new traffic signal equipment, including bicycle signals 
Divco West began roadway reconstruction work in 2019. This reconstruction will be completed in phases. 

Construction updates

Most construction is now complete. However, some remaining minor construction or street markings will take place in summer 2024.

Construction on the O’Brien Highway Reconstruction will be going on through 2024.

McGrath Highway Resurfacing project

MassDOT is doing maintenance construction on Route 28 in Cambridge and Somerville from Sunday, July 30, 2023 to the end of October 2024. Route 28 is O'Brien Highway in East Cambridge and McGrath Highway in Somerville. This work includes:

  • rebuilding sidewalks and wheelchair ramps
  • building new bus boarding islands
  • repairing bridge and overpass structures (in Somerville)
  • repaving

Construction team will provide detours for sidewalk and lane closures. Some overnight closures may detour traffic to streets in Cambridge.
